We were treated to a fabulous concert by the Nick Smart & Nikki Iles Quartet.  Nick Smart (trumpet) and Nikki Iles (piano) are leading jazz musicians who have performed all over the World.  They both hold prominent positions in music education; Nick is Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, and Nikki teaches at every major London Conservatoire including the Academy.  They are joined by leading double bassist Dave Whitford, and percussionist Tim Giles.

Nick and Nikki both also happen to be products of the Bedfordshire Music Service so, during the day of the concert, they held workshops for local young musicians who came and performed a short piece with the quartet in the evening.   We have some very talented young people in this area.  I’m sure we will hear more from them in the future.

Nick Smart’s Jazz Matanzas treated us to en evening of music from the Afro-Cuban and World music scene.  Along with a fresh take on some jazz classics by such greats as Kenny Wheeler and Stan Sulzmann the group performed pieces written by members of the band.  It was a treat to listen to this innovative, but still very melodic group.
